Hampton, GA. (March 7, 2010) – Starting the Camping World Truck Series E-Z-Go 200 in 15th position at the 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway, David Starr was confident he had a strong truck which could compete for the win at one of the fastest tracks on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule. Fighting back from an early pit road penalty the Texas based driver ran as high as second during the 130-lap race before finishing 15th.
Happy with the performance of the No. 81 Zachry Toyota Tundra Starr came to pit road after the first caution on lap 24. Starr had moved up two spots to 13th position by the time the yellow flag was thrown. He radioed to his crew stating his car was handling well and crew chief Doug Wolcott was happy with his lap times. The crew changed four tires and filled the car with Sonoco fuel. Unfortunately, the fuel can was partially attached to the truck when the Starr left the pit box. The driver was assessed a pass through penalty for removing equipment from the assigned pit area when the fuel can landed outside the team’s pit box. When the field went back to green, Starr found himself in the 22nd position but was determined to get back towards the front of the field.
Working to regain ground the Randy Moss Motorsports driver moved up to 15th before pitting on lap 54 during the second yellow flag. The team again took on four fresh Goodyear tires and fuel. The team had a great pit stop picking up valuable positions on the pit lane.
On the fifth of six cautions on lap 77 the No. 81 Tundra had just broken into the top-10 when the team went to pit road. The No. 81 Zachry Toyota Tundra team changed four tires and filled the car with enough fuel to get to the end of the 130-lap event.
On the final restart of the race with only 14 laps to go, Starr was in the second position but could not get his Goodyear tires to grip causing his tires to spin losing valuable track position. Starr finished the E-Z-Go 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 15th position.
Following the race, Starr was disappointed for his team and his primary sponsor Zachry. “We had a great truck, the Zachry Toyota Tundra ran great all day. We had good lap times and a fast truck with good handling, I think we could have had a third to a sixth place finish. After the pit stop penalty we had to work really hard to get back and were able to get up to second. In the end, we just ran out of tires, on that last restart I just didn’t have any grip and the tires spun. I hate it for our sponsor, Zachry, and the team who worked really hard to build a great truck and worked hard on pit road all day.”
David Starr sits 13th in the NASCAR Camping World point standings after the second race of the 2010 season. The No. 81 Zachry Toyota Tundra will be back in action in three weeks at the famed Martinsville Speedway for the running of the Kroger 250. The race can be seen on Saturday, March 27th live on the Speed Channel as well as MRN radio. |
