Daytona Beach, Fla. (February 14, 2010) – David Starr and the No. 81 Zachry Toyota Tundra team worked hard to stay in the 11th annual NextEra Energy 250 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night when their truck was caught up in wrecks that marred the rain delayed 100 lap season opening event. Veteran driver David Starr, able to avoid two large accidents at the famed superspeedway was hit twice and sustained damage when cars behind him didn’t yield to the cautions.
Starting 25th Starr was able to avoid a wreck in turn three on the first lap, only to be hit from behind by another competitor who didn’t slow after the waving of the caution flag. Starr’s No. 81 Zachry Toyota Tundra sustained serious damage on the left side when his Toyota was sideswiped after the caution. The Randy Moss Motorsports team worked furiously to make repairs to return the Zachry machine to the field.
Starr with his new team and crew chief, Doug Wolcott, worked extremely hard to keep the Zachry Tundra on the track. Following the accident on lap one, the team made multiple stops for repairs on the left side and had to contend with the exhaust being torn from the underside of the truck.
The second incident on the track found the Zachry Tundra in the wrong place at the wrong time once again when another driver rear ended Starr after the caution flag. The damage eventually forced the driver to again return to pit road for repairs in addition for four fresh Goodyear Wrangles and fuel. Although heavily damaged, the Zachary team was able to stay on the track and gain valuable track position. The team was never willing to give up and finish the event in the 19th position. The 19th place finish leaves David Starr in 20th place after the first race of the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. “It was a disappointing Speedweeks for our Randy Moss Motorsports team and the Zachry Toyota. Crew chief Doug Wolcott and the entire team worked hard preparing for Daytona. In practice we had a great hot rod, we drafted well and had great speed. We gave up a little at qualifying, but felt good about the truck for the race. Unfortunately we got involved in a wreck before we even completed a lap, which is sometimes just part of the circumstances at Daytona [International Speedway],” said Starr following the race, “The one positive thing I can say is our team fought hard till the end. The way the truck looked and drove, it was amazing that we were able to come away with a 19th place finish. It just shows that this Randy Moss Motorsports team has a great never give up attitude; we’ll just rebound for Atlanta and go from there.”
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will return to action at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 6th for the Atlanta 200. Race broadcast will begin at 1:30 p.m. on SPEED as well as MRN Radio. |
